Bullying on AIM blog post

Our group met today during and after class to discuss our project.  We decided to change the direction of our project slightly.  We chose to do our project on cyberbullying using AOL Instant Messanger (AIM) instead of Facebook, because you can only chat with your friends on Facebook, and you can chat with anyone on AIM.  Our goal for this meeting was to delegate what each person needed to research and decide on a time and place to meet to start the rough draft of our paper.  We decided that our group would meet on Monday, October 20th to write the draft of our paper.  In the meantime, we are each going to research a specific area of the problem and come on Monday ready to contribute our portion to the paper.  Ben will research specific cases of cyberbullying using AIM, Dan will research any current lawsuits, Kelly will look up what the privacy settings are for AIM and their chat rooms, and Lauren will research how AIM deals with complaints and issues.  Our whole group will think of possible solutions to stop cyberbullying.

Today I did research on different companies whom I had read about that did not score very highly in the customer service field for their websites.  There were not many answers or ways I could see that they were similar, but I intend on digging further.  I am also looking into when and where we can meet as a group this week.

Music Download Work blog

I helped my group with various tasks in the final draft of the memo.  I formatted the entire document and made the correct adjustments.  Also, I was in charge of finding solutions to the illegal downloading problem.  After research, I concluded that the best solution to this problem was joining music downloading sites that were legal and already paid for by the university.  Each member did a part of the memo and finished it on time.

Facebook Research

I was able to find a few articles online that talked about our issues with facebook. some of the issues they discussed were:

A father who recently started using Facebook enjoys using it for professional use for work and talking to his coleagues. While his daughter does not like him using Facebook because she is embarrassed that her dad uses the same site to chat.

I also found some demographic material on the age groups who use Facebook and it also discusses which group is growing the most as users.

"Facebook Age Distribution"

O'reilly Radar, "Facebook Growth By Age Group: Share of College - Users is Declining."

I want to show that Facebook need to show more privacy measures, learning tools, tips for privacy, and Facebook need a tutorial for beginning users to use and learn about all of the different types of privacy setting that can be used to keep users safe ou there.

Maybe use pop up menues or something like that for new users to learn from or everyone to use.

A way to select privacy settings in a more user friendly manner for the non teck people out there.

Week 1 Work Blog

This week, after meeting with my MySpace group, I conducted various forms of research.  To begin, in order to obtain insider information, I joined the social networking site.  Without actually being a member of MySpace, you cannot access different portions of their website.  As a team, we decided it was imperative that one of us actually join the site to learn more about what it's all about.  Another important topic I researched was children's protection groups and agencies attempting to change the way America's youth uses the Internet.  I stumbled across an internet-based group galled Enough is Enough.  Their mission is to protect America's children and families from the dangers of using the Internet.  They first formed in 1994 and have since used a wide array of media and public relations outlets to get their message out.  We decided to use Enough is Enough as our target audience for the White Paper Project because although they are aware of MySpace, it is not a focal point of their work.  We believe with the help of this group, we could get our MySpace message out to the masses.  Finally, we worked on our Proposal Memo.  After each team member added their section, I put the final finishing touches on the assignment and proof-read it one last time.

I aided the group in composing the memo into one concise document. I researched on how our solution was feasible or not.  I set up and managed group meetings. I also did further reading and research on the link provided by my group members.

Week 1 Update

I researched about reasons why downloading music is bad. Why it is illegal, and how it affects to the music industry, artist and music store. I found The U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act and studied why it is illegal in the United States. I also read CIRPA, Canadian Independent Record Production Association’s “State Of Music Industry” to compare other countries’ laws and act. I researched about “Nepster” which is the first P2P program in the United States and think about it is illegal or legal program.  Finally, I found articles talks about how many students downloading music from internet illegally and how it affects to the music industry.

week 1 update

For the facebook group, I have researched the data about the privacy issues that deals with facebook. The first article I found talks about the general privacy problems with profile settings with facebook, and how we are not aware of our profile being open to indexing by search engines. The second news is about the facebook account holder's private photos being made public by manipulating a web address to appear as a friend of that person.

also, all of our team members got together on oct 16th, at stewart library and worked on the memo as a teman together.

Week 1 update

Yesterday, I went on to the Purdue Library Database and found a couple articles off the CQ Research website about social-networking and the problem that deals with privacy. One of the articles, our group actually found an example in the article where the student actually got kicked out of one college and transfered to Purdue. We e-mailed him to see if we could maybe setup an interview with him about his experience, but he was not up for it. I, myself and trying to research information on how people use false information. I am not finding a lot right now, but I am still looking in progress.
